One of a kind
Discover Exclusive Edition products from our resident luxury brands, available only at The Royal Exchange, in celebration of our 450th anniversary
Founded by British merchant Sir Thomas Gresham in 1566, The Royal Exchange was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth I in 1571. It was the first purpose-built trading floor in the country, the United Kingdom’s equivalent of the influential Bourse in Antwerp. In 1660, The Royal Exchange introduced luxury boutiques to its upper floors, ticking off yet another ‘first’ by becoming Britain’s first-ever covered shopping mall. The Royal Exchange as we know it today draws parallels to the past, remaining one of London’s most unique shopping destinations 450 years on.
To celebrate this momentous anniversary, a selection of our resident luxury brands – Aspinal of London, Boodles, Fortnum & Mason, Georg Jensen, Ladurée, Montblanc, Ron Dorff, Smythson, Tateossian and Tom Davies Bespoke Opticians – have created Exclusive Edition products, many designed especially for the anniversary and all available exclusively from their boutiques at The Royal Exchange.
The ‘Gresham Grasshopper’ has been a source of inspiration for many of these retailers, who have included the symbol in their exclusive designs. The grasshopper (which can be found in the form of a golden weathervane on top of the building) comes from the Gresham family crest and has consistently appeared on the building in some form over the past 450 years.
French patisserie Ladurée will be releasing special-edition macarons featuring the auspicious insect and The Royal Exchange logo. Luxury stationers Smythson and Montblanc are offering special-edition notebooks and leather goods embossed with a golden grasshopper stamp. British jeweller Tateossian, meanwhile, has taken a three-dimensional approach, creating a grasshopper pin embellished with sparkling Swarovski Element crystals, which will be available when its new boutique at The Royal Exchange opens in September.
And for any customer who purchases an Exclusive Edition product, The Fortnum’s Bar & Restaurant at The Royal Exchange will serve them a complimentary Grasshopper cocktail. This eye-catching green tipple is made from Havana dark rum, crème de menthe and cacao blanc infused with maraca mint and double cream.*
The Royal Exchange is so much more than just a shopping destination; it’s an experience. From the eclectic range of independent and international brands, to the regal architecture and history of this City gem, every visit to The Royal Exchange is special. With this in mind, several of our retailers have launched a limited-edition product that will only be available from their The Royal Exchange boutique.
Aspinal of London has unveiled the Elizabeth box bag, a ladylike handbag inspired by 1950s vanity cases that can be worn across the body or carried via the dainty handle. This covetable bag is available in two English countryside-inspired colourways, Tea Pink and Chestnut, and features a compact mirror sewn into the quilted grosgrain lining.
Bespoke eyewear designer Tom Davies, historic jewellery house Boodles, and Danish design house Georg Jensen have also contributed special-edition products that are available exclusively at The Royal Exchange. Tom Davies has created a new frame for its Precious collection, handcrafted from silver and natural horn. Boodles is presenting a dazzling Ribbons necklace, set with Ashoka-cut diamonds in platinum and 18 carat rose and yellow gold. And Georg Jensen is stocking a stunning crystal carafe with pure silver thread detail.
Our newest resident, Ron Dorff – which is set to open at The Royal Exchange in early September – has designed a limited-edition ‘City Boy’ T-shirt that will only be available to purchase from the new boutique. The luxury sportswear and accessories brand combines Swiss functionality with a dash of French je ne sais quoi for a distinctly modern approach to premium yet practical menswear. The upcoming boutique at The Royal Exchange will be the first City location for Ron Dorff, and the exclusive City Boy T-shirt is the latest in the brand’s now iconic, typographic ‘Man & Boy’ designs. A stylish way to show your love for the City and The Royal Exchange.
